"ONTOS"...it's not just for clanky thing types anymore....
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

This one goes out to Don....(and Mr. Smart)

C-82, an uprated C-119 with a booster jet for short field performance. Reportedly, the C-119 in "Flight of the Phoenix" spent part of it's life in this configuration.

A former air tanker so converted was retired and is at the "Milestones of Flight Museum" in Lancaster, CA.

Can't believe I'd never heard of these before today.

There were at least two styles of boosted C-119s I am pretty sure the Indian AF used ones with the single top mounted jet pod but I thought those had twin supports for the engine (Upside doen V)

There were also ones with pods on the wing tips that had doors that closed off the intake when the engine wasn't being used.

I'm iffy about whether there were ones with two engines (one one each wing outboard of the boom similar to the boosted C-123.

I never knew about a C-82 upgrade or a Civilian marked one (except for surplus planes used for Firefighting, etc)

In skulking around the interwebz for other pics, I found a couple that had an intake barrier on the dorsal engine, but none of boxcars with two outboard mounted jets.

C-82 "defining characteristics" seem to vary, some clearly have an enlarged fuselage/cargo pod and look like chubby C-119's. Some images are likely mislabeled as well, not that such a thing would ever happen with AFV's. Wink

I think the C-82s look chubby because the fuselage is shorter. The C-119 was the developed, larger offspring. The C-82 used 2 R2800 engines, the C-119 used the truely huge R-4360 engine (also used in the B-50, B-36 & C-97)
