3rd ACR M1A2 Photo
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hi Folks!

Found this photo over at Army Images. While I don't think it is no deal that this vehicle is carring two road wheels, I wonder why it is also carrying a sprocket plate.

Roy

Its always good to have 'back up' parts. Notice I didn't say 'extra'. You are not supposed to have 'extra' parts.

Good 'eagle eye' catch on that.

Many times when moving we would have a designated recover vehicle and crew in case something broke down, that may also explain the tow bar hanging on the front. This put an end to arguing over who was gonna tow who and help them get fixed before it even became an issue. Usually put out in the OP Order and again in the convoy brief. It was the easiest way to handle the situation if an M88 wasn't readily available. One one liked being the "designated tow vehicle" though.

M1s have a bad habit of chewing up the sprockets when they throw a track. The power available makes this a lot more common than the old M60-series tanks. So, spare sprockets aren't an uncommon sight on Iraq vehicles.
