This looks interesting. Must have been hydraulic?

Wasn't this one of the "kneeling" tanks that were all the rage in the late 70's? In concept, they were supposed to be able to lower themselves using hydraulics, to reduce their height and make them easier to "hide". It seemed like a good idea at the time, but it didn't work out well in practice for mechanical and reliability reasons. This has the look of a paired set hydraulic actuators, which would make sense.

I could be wrong however, since it also looks similar to the hydro-pnuematic suspension on the British Challenger tanks.

Chuck has it. The MTB70 was able to lay down, tilt side to side and front to rear as needed. One of the many reasons that vehicle was going to cost so much. I don't think the XM703 could. I think that was one of the systems that was left off to reduce the price.

The current JSDF Type 90 can do all that.

XM803 actually retained a hydropneumatic suspension that was able to "kneel," but it was one with a reduced capability compared to MBT70. MBT70 had four controls (one for each corner), while XM803 had a control for each front side, and a single control for the rear.
