Hi Neil, I see that no one else has replied to this one with recent pictures, so I thought I would offer again with some old photos. I have added photos of some of these vehicles to my photobucket account from a visit to Pendleton in 1999. Displays have probably changed quite a bit since then, and I certainly didn't see all of the vehicles on your list, however If any of my photos are of use you are welcome to use them.

Welcome aboard blackdog,

Thanks for sharing your pictures. Many of these vehicles have not been seen here before.

I'm wondering if the M60A3 came from the Portola Rail Road Museum, I've lost track of her since they moved one of their very large Steam Locomotives.

Joe,
I was thinking the same thing about the A3.

Thanks blackdog for the pics! They are a goldmine. Looks like I'll be planning a road trip to Camp P. real soon!

blackdog, good hearing from you again!

Many thanks for the info!

The Type 97 Shinhoto Chi-Ha was formerly on display at the Navy Museum, Washington Navy Yard, Washington, D.C. and the Marine Air-Ground Museum at Quantico. I was told in 2008 by my contact at the National Museum of the Marine Corps at Quantico that "the 97 is actually on loan to Camp Pendleton."

Any idea where else it might be at Pendleton?

I also understand that Pendleton had a couple of Shermans on display in the 1970s - are they still there?

Below is my complete listing of Pendleton updated with your info - please let me know if I have something wrong.

Thanks!

Post subject: Re: Help/Pics Needed - Camp Pendleton, CA

The M60A3 is indeed from the Portola Railroad Museum, I just couldn't think of the name. It was painted four color camo but we painted it tan.

We have two M76 Otters. One is at Barstow and one is on Camp Pendleton. Neither run, and we don't have any plans for them at this time due to lack of parts availability. I had done a lot of research to try and find suitable replacement roadwheels (which are actually pneumatic) but I had no luck.

As for the Type 97, still don't have a clue as to where it is. I am almost 100% positive that it is not here. I don't think that the Flying Leathernecks museum would have it either, even though they have two Japanese cannons, and I don't think MCRD has the room.

We have two M56 Scorpions, one has a fake gun and has had most of the fenders rebuilt and the other is a QM-56 Mobile Land Target that was used by China Lake.

We only have one M60A3.

The XM579 runs and was restored when it was on loan to Gabaraino (I spelt it wrong) WW2 Museum in San Rafael.

Don't know what a YW531 is.

I think that the LVTE1 was swapped out for another P5 style track from Barstow. Check the pictures I posted in the other thread, as I'm not entirely sure.

We are working on a trade with 29 Palms for their Ontos. We would like to fully restore it but from the photos I've seen it looks to be in pretty poor shape (track and roadwheel wise). I went looking for the mythical MCAS Miramar/Camp Elliott Ontos but had no luck. I have spoken to several people who have seen it though. I am going to MCAS Miramar this weekend and plan to do some more looking around.

Oh, and about the two Shermans that were on display here. One of them is now on display at 1st Tanks, 29 Palms. The other one... not quite sure. It may be the one that is on display at 4th Tanks? I heard from a guy a while back that there were several International trucks and other equipment that made it out in the late 80's and early 90's but I have no idea if this is accurate information or not.

We do want a Sherman though. And any other armor that anyone is willing to give up, really. The Mechanized Museum came into the picture kind of late in the game so we're playing catch up with all the other museums that have had stuff forever...

I'll recheck with my Quantico contact - maybe he misremembered 29 Palms for Pendleton?

Don't know what a YW531 is.

Chinese APC, likely ex Iraqi.

Here you go. Admittedly looks like it may be at a traffic circle than at the museum.

This is the LVTE1 - for whatever reason, LVTP5 variants (like the LVTH6, etc) didnt carry the same number designator... I didnt see this one in your Barstow pics...

Well, Dontos on here would certainly be the guy to talk to about that...

On a semi-related note, is that M3A1 Scout Car still undergoing restoration at Miramar?

That's what I suspected, thanks for the confirmation.
