M47 in Killeen, TX town square...
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

If someone will coach me, I can post a couple of snaps of ex-Jugoslavian M-47s. Not the best quality (snap and scoot when transitting through an active Bosnian Federation camp).

Anywhere near "Han P"..?? ( 058 perhaps..??)

I had a few minutes to spare today and went to the town square where I knew this M47 and a Cobra helo would be. My son Jeffrey will be posting the Helo over on officers club, but I can tell you that it's the same shade of green, yuk! I actually jumped a fence around the displays to get the close ups. The tank had to have been painted very recently as it was very shiney but very little appeared masked off except the MG mount and the main guns end. The paint under this coat was already very thick, as I've found with every M47 I've found, so I couldn't get any serial numbers from the lugs. The data palte on the rear appears Italian, so this is probably a Military Assistance tank that made its way back to the states but was saved from a range. I thought it looked in pretty good shape compared to some of the M47's I've seen. Can anyone identify or assist on its signifigance if there is any? Tomorrow I'm heading up to North Ft Hood to the MATES area to check out and photograph that M4A3 (105) HVSS thats out front. Hope to get it posted tomorrow evening!!!

Jeff - great pictures! I've written up this location and the M47 on preservedtanks.com:

Location ID 93820: Killeen M47

I've added your photo's, with credit of course - I hope that's ok.

[Also sent by PM, as Jeff hasn't been on the forum for a while]

My God, it has been a while since I was on this site! My boys are 16 and 11 and play soccer, baseball, and football year round here in Texas so I am VERY busy to say the least. I might have one day a week without sports. The boys are gifted so the sports are even that much better to watch and participate in as a "Booster"! I also have spent what time I do have restoring and working on old MOPARS, (74 Dodge Dart Swinger, 72 Dodge D100 P/U, 83 RamCharger with a 440, and my daily driver 97 Ram 4X4 with 8inch lift and Super Swamper tires. Also since I became an 88N from an 11C I just dont have the chance to be around armor like I did before. Currently I work as an In-Processing NCO for new Soldiers at Ft Hood. Hope to hold this job till I retire around December 2012 through May 2013 timeframe. That will give me 30+ years of service!
Of course its OK to use whatever I post. I did and do it to provide others with information and knowledge of the military armors past contributions.

Returning them to the US was part of the deal when Italy received them. They could only be passed on to another country the US approved of or returned. A few years back a train load (if I remember right, just under of 100 of them) of Italian M47s stopped here in El Paso for a few days before moving up to White Sand Missile Range.

I too am surprised those M47s were not only handed back over to the US Government, but actually shipped back to the USA. I spotted a number of them in the late 1980s here in the Netherlands, they were awaiting their turn on the ranges. A Major told me they had to import them from Italy as they were short of AFVs for target duties. Probably the US Army had the same problem, otherwise I cannot see the reason to ship them back.

I gave a quick look at an old article, during the late '70 Somalia got M47s, M113s and V-150 Commando from the USA. I wonder from where the M47s came from?

Then, between 1978 and 1986 Italia send plenty of equipment, including around one hundred M47s and M113s, plus 250 brand new FIAT 6614 and 6616 armoured cars.

I remember seeing some M47 relics on TV during the "Restore Hope" times.

I won't give the website for this one, too many pop-ups. (captioned as an M47)

Most of what's lying about are of T54 etc (Or Chinese equivallent?), but this one below looks like a Centurion to me?

Edit, I give up, can't post it, click the line & scroll down!
