Post subject: Official "Planes of Fame Air Museum" YouTube Channel

I found Planes of Fame's YouTube channel. I didn't know that they had one.
www.youtube.com/user/POFmuseum

Here's a nice little video tour of the museum Smile

www.youtube.com/watch?v=S19vIadUQO4

Here's a video of their P-38, 23 Skidoo, taxiing at the February flying event.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRhXwlL_jjk

I am in the crowd making my own video of the P-38 somewhere. Wink
I've uploaded it to my YouTube channel but IMO this one is much better.

The crowd at February's flying history event seemed larger to me than the one in January that featured the "New build" Flugwerks Fw-190. There was also one lucky 14 year old who got to take a ride in the P-38. He won this months raffle of an airplane ride. Normally it is the L-19 Birddog that they give you the ride in after you win the raffle. This month it was winners choice. That had to be a ride of a lifetime. Cool

If you look closely a the P-38 video you will see him hunched over behind the pilot.

I visited the museum a couple of years ago and spent much more time there than I thought I would. It's really worth visiting.

Most excellent. That place has certainly changed, used to be no guard rails but just painted lines on the floor and you were trusted not to clamber around the planes. Later came ropes and now they have full-on guardrails I see.

I was born in Pomona, just up the road from there, and my Dad used to take us to to this museum very often when I was little, like 8 years old. The SBD Dauntless #39 shown at 2:18 is very familiar, I seem to remember it from the very first visit and has always been there.

There also was an arcade-like gunnery game using real gun camera footage and a stick, you peered through a gunsight portal at the footage and pushed the button on the stick to "fire" the guns, and tracer lights would be displayed on the footage so you felt like you were shooting at the planes yourself. Very cool, and a great training tool for any 3rd-grader who wanted to get a jump on air-to-air gun skills. Smile

Also I very clearly remember they had a 'backyard" section full of old hulks and unrestored parked aircraft that you could go walk around in. I remember there was the front half of a fuselage of a big plane with an open glass nose (like a B-29) laying on the ground, I walked in right through the nose and up through the cockpit area, then exited out the big hole in the back. All kinds of sharp edges and parts laying around, stuff that would give lawyers and parents a heart attack today.

In later years you could visit and walk out on the ramp to some of the hangars where restoration work was going on. Last time I visited the museum in the 90's we got yelled at for poking our nose in hanger where they were restoring a Bearcat.

Lot of memories there!!!

I remember the old boneyard area. I went in the early 80's and you could walk around and through the planes without anyone bothering you. Like you said some of the aircraft were in pretty rough condition and you could have easily cut yourself on the jagged edges. I think they still have that land but it is not open to the public anymore. They have a smaller "boneyard" area in the museum proper now.

At that time the museum was split into two different areas with one being the jet part of the museum with the boneyard and the prop area of the museum with the gift shop which was the more popular part of the museum. Both parts were at the Chino airport but you had to drive from one location to the other.
I know I have it somewhere and I wish I could find the museum map from that time I went in the 1980's to compare it with the museum now.

The aircraft in the video was flown by Charles Lindbergh in 1944. www.planesoffame.org/i...turnid=128
There is a picture of Charles Lindbergh"s entry into the planes logbook at the link above along with the planes history.

Just before the video fades out while the Zero is taxiing in front of the crowd you can see me.
Have fun trying to figure out which one is me in the crowd though. Mr. Green

Some recent happenings at Planes of Fame.

P-59 Flap Test
Standard Definition: youtu.be/soHrhuR8FJ4
This is the first test of the P-59 flaps in several years. Unfortunately I was unable to get the entire test since they started it before I knew what was going to happen.

The Planes of Fame A6M5 was going to be the featured aircraft for the December monthly event. At the moment it is being disassembled for shipment to the Tokorozawa Aviation Museum in Tokyo, Japan. This is a going to be a 5 month temporary stay in Japan before returning to Planes of Fame next year.

For the first time in almost 16 years Planes of Fame's HA-1112-M1L Hispano roared to life late in the evening of April 13, 2016.
www.facebook.com/peter...7362184262
It was last seen flying in the movie Pearl Harbor.

They were having some wiring issues when I left on Wednesday so I was just as surprised as anyone that they started it up that evening.
