M1121 pics
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: M1121 pics

Hi all,

How many of you knew that the M1121 was what the Stryker was type-classified as? I had to ask the PFC on one of them.

These were being used for rollover drill training for our cadets, in case circumstances required them to ride in one. I suspect that an underlying reason was also to let the cadets see the latest and greatest of cool Army stuff. There were four of them when I took these pics, and one was so new that many of the electical gadgets inside, and the seat cushions, were still in protective shipping wrap.. It smelled like a new car inside. All are a single color, no camo pattern.

All of the pics are my own.

Interior:

Remote Weapon Station:

The RWS has a lot of neat video and imaging capabilities, and the driver has his own fixed camera and a video screen in front of him for buttoned up driving. There is a repeated screen in the back area so you can see where you are going. Lots of neat bells and whistles on this guy. The crews love them, and think they are the greatest thing ever.

They are supposedly being issued their MGS this week (with all of the needed fixes applied, according to the PFC I talked to), but aren't allowed to shoot it yet. Apparently some fire-control issue causes up to 20 degrees of dispersion from the aim point for the 105mm gun. I've heard that it may be from an undersized elevation/stab drive, but don't know anything more. It does make me wonder why we are issuing a vehicle that is not yet combat capable...I smell politics and high-level butt-covering. There is considerable scepticism among some the officers here about the MGS as a system.

Enjoy!
C

Very nice pics, Chuck. At the risk of asking the obvious, are the two hooked vertical masts (toward the front and atop the hull) "wire catchers"?

This nomenclature is bewildering - Are you sure it isn't M1126? Unless that's not the basic infantry carrier version. All these new vehicle numbers, I wouldn't be surprised if even the PFC got it wrong - remember, in WWII every panzer was a tiger and every AT gun was an 88!

Hi Chuck! Hi Folks!

I have to agree with Mike. I think the individual either mixed the numbers up or we have a new type classification. The Stryker FOVs was type classificated a few years ago.

M-1126 Infantry Carrier Vehicle (ICV)
M-1127 Reconnaissance Carrier Vehicle (RCV)
M-1128 Moblie Gun System (MGS)
M-1129 Mortar Carrier (three versions)
M-1130 Command Carrier
M-1131 Fire Support Carrier (FSC)
M-1132 Engineer Squad Carrier
M-1133 Medical Carrier
M-1134 ATGM
M-1135 NBC Recon Vehicle (NBCRV)

Thanks for the photos. More would be great if possible.

To my knowledge no Stryker has a camo pattern. All are plain green. That point is interesting in that all other AFVs in the Army inventory are camo I believe (save for the desert painted ones).

It's a neat vehicle and fairly quiet. Too big of a turn radius though for my tastes. But plenty of room inside for that squad.

I looked it up on the net (thank God for the net) and M1121 is a TOW-armed Humvee. What the difference between this and the M966 is I don't know. Apparently M1121 is also the code for a $100 pair of running shoes.

Say what? The M1121 is a TOW Humvee?

AFAIK
M966 TOW has the basic armor without a winch.
M1036 TOW is a M966 with a winch.
M1045 TOW has supplemental armor, no winch.
M1046 TOW is a M1045 with a winch.

The Up-Armored Carrier is the M1114, could the M1121 be that vehicle with a TOW system?

There is something like sixteen 'M' numbered versions of the Hummer.
Still confused and I am not even going into the shoe thing!
Sgt, Scouts Out! Confused

M1126? OK! (PFC's are not known for being accurate sources of factual information, so there you go...)

I have more pics (nearly 100...ya gotta love digital photography!), and I'll try to get them up in the next few days. Kinda busy right now. We're down to the last 5 days of the cycle, and I'm trying to get all my Evals done.

Hi all,

No slats. Not used in training here in the US, and here in the forested Pacific NW. No doubt they would be ripped off and ripped up in very short order, from the narrow tree-lined roads and trails. However, all of the Stryker soldiers new about the slat armor, and mentioned that it would be installed when they deployed.

The Saudi's have asked for a whole bunch of STRYKERS...........

(Source: US Defense Security Cooperation Agency; issued July 20, 2006)

WASHINGTON --- The Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress of a possible Foreign Military Sale to Saudi Arabia to continue modernization of the Saudi Arabian National Guard (SANG).

The total value, if all options are exercised, could be as high as $5.8 billion.

The Government of Saudi Arabia has requested a possible sale for the continuation of the United States supported effort to modernize the SANG by providing Major Defense Equipment (MDE) and non-MDE items:

--724 LAV-25, LAV-AG, LAV-M, LAV-AT, LAV-CC, LAV-PC, LAV-A, LAV-AC LAV-E and LAV-R Light Armored Vehicles (LAV);
--1,160 AN/VRC-90E Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio Systems (SINCGARS) Vehicular Single Long-Range Radio Systems;
--627 AN/VRC-92E SINCGARS Vehicular Single Long-Range Radio Systems;
--518 AN/VRC-119 E SINCGARS Vehicular Single Long-Range Radio Systems;
--2,198 SINCGARS Spearhead Handheld;
--1,700 AN/AVS-7D Night Vision Goggles (NVG);
--432 AN/PVS-14 NVG;
--630 AN/PAS-13 Thermal Weapon Sight;
--162 84mm Recoilless Rifle; and
--Harris Corporation Commercial High Frequency Radios; various commercial vehicles; fixed facilities and ranges; simulations; generators; battery chargers; protective clothing; shop equipment; training devices; spare and repair parts; sets, kits, and outfits; support equipment; publications and technical data; personnel training and training equipment; contractor engineering and technical support services and other related elements of logistics support. The estimated cost is $5.8 billion.

The proposed sale coupled with the training, assistance, and advice provided by the U.S. Government through the Office of the Program Manager SANG will serve to make a key regional ally and partner in the Global War on Terror more capable of defeating those who would threaten regional stability and less reliant on the deployment of U.S. combat forces to maintain or restore stability in the Middle East.

The SANG needs these defense articles so that it can effectively conduct security and counter-terrorism operations. The continuation of services under the SANG Modernization Program is an evolution of the SANG as an effective defensive force with the advice, assistance, and training of the U.S. Army. The Modernization Program ensures necessary training, logistics, support, doctrine development and force integration for the continuing expansion and use of their weapon systems. These services will remain the cornerstone of an effort to upgrade and enhance the infrastructure of the SANG organization.

The proposed sale will also provide SANG with additional command, control, and communications equipment needed to operate in a secure communications environment that will facilitate the performance of its mission within Saudi Arabia. It is consistent with the National Command Authority's intent for stability in the Central Command Area of Operation. The radios will modernize equipment and provide the critical VHF and HF links necessary for a large fast moving force and integration with the SINCGARS radios SANG already has fielded in its Light Armored Vehicle and Light Infantry Brigades.

The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not affect the basic military balance in the region. Saudi Arabia is capable of absorbing and maintaining this additional MDE equipment in its inventory.

There are a couple of weird things in there.............the comment about the 84mm recoiless rifle(s) is what exactly? The only 84mm I know is the Swedish Carl Gustaf anti-tank/material weapon?

The comment that it won't effect Regional Stability remains true only if Saudi Arabia remains pro-wester, at least in what it says if not in what it does.

This has also been reported at the same time............

Caesar Artillery Systems Go On With Export Success

(Source: GIAT Industries; dated July 20, issued July 21, 2006)

GIAT has received an order for 76 Caesar truck-mounted 155mm artillery pieces. AFP reports the customer is Saudi Arabia, but GIAT will not confirm.

The Sauds are gonna have a very mobile force with all of this wheeled armour!

Not so fast there with that name "Stryker". The Stryker is only ONE branch off the Piranha/LAV FOV tree. Sense General Dynamics Land Combat Systems took over Swiss Mowag, those LAVs could be any of the LAV I, II, III, or IV vehicles. They could also be a mix of 4x4s, 6x6s, 8x8, or 10x10s. The report only listed funcations which I admit sounds like most will be 8x8s. I for one, will be surpised if they turn out to Strykers, I would bet they will be more like the USMC's new LAV II group of vehicles. That term "LAV" now days could mean almost anything.

Your right!
In the US Military it is called the M3 MAAWS. MAAWS = Multi-Role Anti-Armor Anti-Personnel Weapon System. The M3 has a Picatinny developed Fire Control Device (FCD) in place of the Bofors FCD. The Ranger Battalions picked it up back in 1990 through U.S. Army Special Operations Command. The U.S. Naval Special Warfare Command is testing it for possible issue to Seal teams.

My 2 cents on Strykers and Spot Report on the modified Carl Gustaf in U.S. Service.
Sgt, Scouts Out! Smile
