Need a little help
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Need a little help

Hi everyone,
I am working on another puzzle and could use a little help from this esteemed board Smile . I sure could use the serial numbers (not registration/USA) from the following tanks if possible. Neil has already helped by posting the serial number from the M60A2 at Aberdeen.

M60A2 located at the Fort Knox Museum (Dontos?? Wink )
M60A2 in the Littlefield Collection California (Toadman??? Wink )
M60A2 located in the Danville Virginia collection

I believe those should not be that hard to get (I hope).

The last two might be harder since they are out door monuments/displays.

M60A2 Located at the American Legion Post at Brady’s Bend, East Brady PA
M60A2 Located at the American Veterans Post 136, 614 South State Street, Ephrata PA

I am not holding out much hope for the 2 located at Aberdeen since I don't think they are available for public viewing and I haven't seen any pictures of either. Believe it or not that's all that's left of them that I know of Shocked .

The numbers should all be 4 digits located on the left front tow eye (Driver's view) and left rear hull/deck just above the fender below the 3 deck securing bolts.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Joe D

Joe,
I should be able to get the s/n off of Littlefield's in a couple weeks.

Joe, you mean there are another 2 M60A2s at Aberdeen, "behind the fence" (ie the testing areas) I presume? Did you originally know of 3 at APG, because I know the one I gave you info on was previously behind the fence.

Joe - If there is more than one at Aberdeen do you think the Museum owns the second one?

Ephrata isn't too far drom Lancaster, Maybe I can talk my wife into a day trip to Pa Dutch country this spring. And East Brady looks within 45 minutes of so of my daughters place so maybe on a trip up there I can getby there. No promises right now but ...

Hi everyone,

M60A2 located at the Fort Knox Museum (Dontos?? Wink )

No Problem....

Believe it or not that's all that's left of them that I know of Shocked .

BTW: What about the M60A2 on Zussman Range ??

Hey now that I'm thinking about it...... There are also several M113 Mortar tracks ( 4, I think..) as well as two V100 or V150's. Its been a couple of years since I was last up there, But they were definitely onsite.

The M60A2 is a turret mounted on an M48(A ? ) chassis. It is 'wired' and used actively. Although it isn't operational, the turret and hoffman devise are operated by remote control.

Uhh, I'm sorry Neil, Bob, I meant Anniston, not Aberdeen ,
That's what happens when you stay up too late.

Dontos,
I really can't use anything off the Zussman tank because it's actually an M48(A0/A1) with an M60A2 turret. The same applies to the Valley Station KY tank and the one that was at the GMD range at Knox (Possibly now the Zussman Tank). I use hulls as an ID reference, since the turrets are always swapped around or removed for conversions (M60A3, AVLB's, ROBAT, BMP-3 VISMOD etc).

Toadman,
Thanks in advance, and on a side note I could use confirmation on his other M60's. the A0 and A1 that he has. Please check your PM too.

Bob,
Does your wife ever say "What's the REAL reason you are wanting to make this trip?" whenever you propose them??? Laughing

BTW I found what's left of M60A2 SN 4427 here in Iraq, picture to be posted later,

Thanks everyone,
Joe D

An A2 in Iraq? Did we suppy some of them to Iran? (That is the only way I can think of one getting there)

Oh and no she doesn't ask because I tell her when we are thinking about it. Day trips to Lancaster usually happen about twice a year; Outlets in Lancaster, Chow-Chow at the PA Dutch village in Intercourse, And pick up some fantastic Raisin and Cinnamon Bread at a Bakery on the way (It is only open Weds-Fri but we found a farmers market that carries their bread on the weekend)

As far as going up to my daughters we have a wedding coming up at the end of July and I know there is at least one trip up there for a shower. My Wife can go to that and the future son-in law, his father (a Viet war vet) and I can run off for the afternoon.

Mission planning, making sure ther is something in it for everyone, that's the trick Wink

No, no such thing, it's actually an AVLB made from an A2 hull, that's why I said what's left of one. Found two at a FOB a ways South from Baghdad. Pretty much abandoned or if not in a very sorry state of repair.

Sounds like you are all over it with the mission planning. I figure after about 3-4 months after I get home mine will be up for a few road trips.

According to Ron Fry, “Rusting Away in the USA, Military Machines International, Vol. 6, No. 4 (September 2006) there are 2 M60A2s on the ranges at Fort Knox - ie in the areas you can hunt in...

So was the M247 Sgt York made from an A2 hull? If so, was the serial numbers changed?

I thought the Sgt York was made from an M48 hull. I'll have to look at the one at Aberdeen next week

Yeah, its an M48 hull - or at least should be, unless someone got the idea to put a Sergeant York turret on an M60 hull...
