The later Hotchkiss guns had a pair of recoil cylinders on each side of the barrel. I thought I had an image of the Hotchkiss on a French Navy cruiser from the 1880s but can't find it. I did have a drawing of the 3 Pounder Hotchkiss though - the mounting is different - the bars are spring steel to absorb some of the recoil.
