Bovington
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Thanks for the info Paul, very useful. I am not worried about light conditions, I can push my camera to ISO 4000 and still get good results. It's now clear to me I have to bring a telephoto lens.

I will be in England next month and may spend a day in Bovington. During my last visit the Tamiya hall was closed, since they were setting up the Afghanistan display. All in all, I have enough excuses to go back Smile

Massimo

PS Thinking about it, the telephoto could be handy in Hendon as well

They are clearing out the British Steel Hall next month in preparation for a new exhibition in there. Mention was made of actually starting the Tortoise up to move it out as its really too heavy for their tractor or even recovery vehicle.

Thanks Trevor, I checked your website first, but failed to find it because I was looking among the tank inside the Museum, I didn't realized you assigned it to a different location.

I had a look at the VCC, but without a proper telephoto lens I've got very few shots worth keeping.
I see a 105 mm Sherman here, I guess I can rely on P-o for knowing the exact model Smile

That's an M4(105) HVSS, serial number 58486, built at Chrysler in October, 1944. It has USMC markings

yes it is. Its serial number is unknown yet.. it was built by Pressed Steel Car sometime in 1944. It has been rebuilt in the 1950s and sent to an European country as Military Defense Assistance Program.

Don't forget you can now use the new link on the front page to search by type, so in this case you could look up all Preserved British Tanks - Medium Tanks, then A41 Centurion Tanks. Given how many Centurions there are in the UK you might then want to search down that page for 'Bovington'.

From the same page, I'd say your second Centurion is number 54.

Using a similar method for Preserved American Tanks: Sherman Based Vehicles then M4A1 (76) we don't get many in the UK. It looks like that VCC M4A1 is the Isle of Wight example returned home.

Similarly I only list one M4 (105) so your second Sherman should be this one.
