Smithsonian Museum armor collection??? Panthers???
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Smithsonian Museum armor collection??? Panthers???

I came across this in the May 1967 issue of AFV News... I presume this collection no longer exists, but still...

Anyway, John Kennon wrote about the Ordnance Museum being kicked out of its old building and that much of the collection will be now be displayed/left outside.... Okay, really old news... But this part was very interesting & news to me:

"Inasmuch as the Smithsonian Museum collection of WW2 ordnance has been stored for 22 years in Virginia waiting for a home (several Panthers & others, just rotting away)... [rest concerns the Ordnance Museum]".

I knew the Smithsonian owned an M1917 (the one now on display at the Ordnance Museum) - but Panthers???

Anyone heard of this?

Neil

Former Patton Museum director Cavanaugh told me that the Panther II now at the museum, was originally in the inventory of the Smithsonian. He didn't give me any other details.
