Wrecks and relics in the USA
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Beside the earlier posting of military equipment in Nebraska, here's a few I found in Kansas (again, these are pased on personal observation);

Ft. Riley - north by the tank gunnery range is an M60 and an M41 (A1 or A3?). Both are in pretty good shape
Junction City - two M5 3" AT guns in City Park downtown
Marysville - M7 (1944 production) in City Park
M110A2 by National Guard armory
Seneca - M7 (1944 production) across from city swimming pool

Hello toall, the movers just packed and loaded my household goods here at Ft Irwin, for my PCS move to Ft Hood. They about crapped themselves when they saw all the military items and NASCAR paraphenalia I have collected, (and they had to pack and load). They weren't going to pack a large piece of sheet metal I had in the corner of my garage until I told them it wasn't trash, but rather ther nose skin from an F-105 Thunderchief, (Thud) that crashed at Ft Irwin back on 11 Feb 1964. Ahh, the stuff I collect, haha. I love this "Wrecks and Relics" thread. I was wondering if we could start a site, or if someone would like to collect and catagorize by state, the location and type of military armor/vehicles/aircraft that we as members of this DG have found. I would love to do it but am to busy with the military currently to get serious about it. Once get to Hood, I'll be collecting all the serial numbers and USA numbers of all the equipment at the two museums there. I already have all the one's from Ft Irwin, and most of the ones from Ft Eustis and the surrounding area.

Leslie,
The following list is of M60’s that I have documented/photographed in detail. They are still in their current display locations. The nomenclatures are basic. If you need I can give more information on any particular model. Almost all have Serial numbers. I can provide registration numbers for about half. I also have a list of M60’s that are targets, wrecks, other sources, and possible locations if you are interested.

M60The XM-1 at Fort Campbell KY is the Chrysler (NOT GM) Diesel variant.

I have some other corrections for your list and will send you the updates when I get more time. Your list has helped me with my M60 quest, unfortunately it will have to be put on hold for a while

Joe D

Hello Joe,
Thanks! I'am still busy with updating it with all the new info.
I'am very interested in the target, wrecks etc!

Thanks!
Regards,
Lesley

Here is a list of tanks and artillery in Nebraska. This is not complete, but these have all been seen by me in person. I know the list has more than "tanks, but I record it all together.

Gary Binder

Hello Gary,
Almost every one in your list was ''new'' for me!

Thanks!

Lesley

Also, try this link: www.geocaching.com/see...e6cedf1f33 for more vehicles and their locations.

This is the site I lost track off for a while when it came under new management.

The site just worked for me. Plenty of images with predictably incorrect captions. There are two nuggets worthy of further exploitation - the coords and local location information. Throughout the world, for instance many in US, Canada, UK, Europe, RSA and Australia.

Living here in Texas, I was able to drive up and see both Camp Mabry in Austin and Fort Hood in Killeen a couple of years ago.

In addition to the three (M1A1, M4, T26) listed on the original list by Mr. Delsing they also have the following (according to their exhibit guide dated 2003):
M24 Chaffee (listed in their guide - but I don't remember seeing it)
M47 Patton (don't remember seeing this one either)
M48A1 Patton
M60 MBT
M60A1
M60A3
M728 CEV
plus numerous APC's and SP as well as German Hetzer and a SdKfz251

Fort Hood has tons of equipment, Mr. Button will have quite a time cataloging all of these.

Some of the ones I saw there not on the list includes:
M36B1 - (I assume is a post war assembly)
M10 (US version)
M10 Achillies
M18
M4A1
M4A3E8
M48A5
M60
M60A1 Rise/Passive
T55
T62
T72
and lots more.

Here some photos I took:

From Camp Mabry:

I love this "Wrecks and Relics" thread. I would love to do it but am to busy with the military currently to get serious about it.

There is a website that deals with Preserved US Military Aircraft (currently lists some 2,800 aircraft - so its pretty comprehensive) and has many links to museums and such where they are found. Althought I'm not sure how up to date that it is.

Preserved US Military Aircraft

I thought that its a pretty cool site. I too would like to see a comprehensive list of Armor Vehicles online with photos. Sites often have photos and detail shots but do not always list the location of the vehicle. I would like to see one of US Vehicles as well as those in other countries (Armor vehilces as well as Aircraft and Ships).

If you guys will collaborate, we can do that here...I'd just make it a "sticky" thread and the contributors could edit at will as new information comes available. Since it would be "sticky", it'd be always at the top of the page...easy to find and reference/link. Just let me know if you want to proceed...then clean up what we have in this thread and we'll start a new one with the results. Wink

..or, we could just "sticky" this one, unless y'all think it's too messy, as is...

BTW, should it be only in the U.S. for some reason, or why not preserved vehicles worldwide? Separate threads or combined? All AFV types? Just some stuff to think about...impact would be maximized if it was all AFV's Worldwide, with a cumulative total for U.S. and other countries in separate "posts" within the thread...for travellers trying to keep track of regional concentrations instead of jumping about through what might become a long thread (since this one is four pages already).

Maybe you should nominate a "U.S. Editor" for one cumulative total and an "Overseas Editor" for the other(s) with responsibility for revising the "Master List" (after appropriate discussion/debate with others in other posts within the thread). It'd be a dynamic thing that changes as the displays and available information do. The designated "edittors" would have the first post and editting rights for the "Master list" (for continuity of style and to avoid a Wikipedia like tug-of-war), discussion or other contributions could be below that initial post.

Up to you guys....and you gotta select (and accept) the position of edittors...I'm not qualified.

I would vote for a US thread and a World thread. Just my 2 cents. Or .62 cents after taxes.

Here is another to add to the list

M-48 alongside the American legion hall in Pemberton NJ. Haven't had a chnce to do a close up look yet but it has the TC's cupola so I'm assuming it's earlier than an A3

Some additions:

Fort Dix, NJ:

T-72M
BTR-50
MT-LB
BVP M-80A

M46
M7 Priest

Lawrenceville, NJ

A bunch of US equipment...M60s, M49, M16 Halftrack and I even saw a Nike Hercules tucked away behind some weeds...most interesting was a
Early War US light tank that was mostly found in Alaska, who's name escapes me at the moment.

Sea Girt, NJ
T26E3 or M26 Pershing
M3 Stuart
Several different variants of the Jeep (Ford, dodge built verisons)
BMP-1

I guess I should take a day or something and drive around and photograph them all Wink

Interesting to find a Yugoslav piece, at least one thats not of WWII vintage brought over after the wars.

As in a Marmon-Herrington tank??? Ones sold to the Dutch but couldnt be delivered (due to thye Japanese invasion of the East Indies) and taken over as limited standard for use in Alaska? That would be most interesting indeed...

Doug, I am all for a site listing vehicles, seperating the US from overseas would work too. Finding an editor would be the issue. If it was done right (I'm sure it will) it would be a great tool for those of us that travel alot. It could also possibly document those "Missing Examples" or dispell any rumors of where is what. It could end up being the ultimate source of vehicle locations with this groups expertise.
