Roy Lingle's armor models
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Roy Lingle, this is your life!

I took the liberty of lifting images of Roy's excellent armor models from "The Glue", IPMS/El Paso's newsletter ( www.ipmselpaso.us/news.htm ), and have posted them here as a showcase of one of our talented members.

Many thanks and a tip 'o' the hat to Jens Mehner for the advice on lifting pdf document images and converting them to jpegs. Wink

Here's that devilishly handsome modeler himself. Check out the hat. Scouts out!!

Astonishing he has time for any modeling, what with being able to flash those "come hither" looks like that, I'm surprized he can tear himself away from adoring babeage! Laughing

Nice models, too...I'd looked through some issues, but wasn't finding them in the recent ones. What scale are you working in mostly, Roy?

Verrry nice Roy,

I see you beat that T-60 into submission- what's that, AER?

Doug, going out on a limb, I'd say 1/35, I can see Tamiya, Italeri and possibly DML. Don't worry, as soon as he has his very own CIA T-Shirt, he won't have any time for plastic models left. Wink

Bob, it was nothing, glad you helped out, I couldn't have done it until later this week. BTW: This little advice also works for websites that have their graphics protected from downloading... See, all this time spent at the KitKat Club was good for something. Mr. Green

And now, Mr Call-me-modest Steinbrunn, how about some of your works, including that ole Franklin Mint magic? Cool

Hi Jens! Hi Folks!

- Jens_O_Mehner
Verrry nice Roy,

I see you beat that T-60 into submission- what's that, AER?

BEAT? !!! Evil or Very Mad Crying or Very sad Rolling Eyes Twisted Evil Sad Crying or Very sad and a bunch of words I should not say!

That is the Zvezda kit.

- Jens_O_Mehner

Doug, going out on a limb, I'd say 1/35, I can see Tamiya, Italeri and possibly DML.

Good call Jens! I mostly try to do 1/35 kits. Fingers are too fat for the smaller scales and 1/35 is easier on the eyes. As for a DML kit (which I do have tons of), I am guessing you are thinking about the M1A1? No, that is an Academy kit which needed a lot of beating to get into shape.

Follow up edit: Italeri? No, all the others are Tamiya kits except the M8 Armored Car which is a very old Monogram 1/32 scale kit.

- Jens_O_Mehner

Don't worry, as soon as he has his very own CIA T-Shirt, he won't have any time for plastic models left. Wink

Time! Who has time to do models? All I have been doing is buying the newest kits, looking at them, and them putting them up on a shelf.
About three years ago, my mother became very sick and I had to start looking after her affairs. I haven't had much time to work on much sense then. When I have had time to relax, I spend most of it hanging out here with you folks. Most of my kits are from a few years back which is why I what I have done doesn't show up in the Glues. Give me some time to try the suggestion for taking photos out of an Adobe documents and I will try to post some of the other ones that I have besides the ones Bob (A109) posted today. THANKS BOB!

Somehow I did do a rush job on a Tamiya M551 last year for a contest. Took second place! Razz Razz (Secert Message: there were only two kits in the category)

I do have three I have started working on and maybe I will get one of them finished sometime during this year! Confused
Thanks Guys!

Hi Bob (A109)! Hi Folks!

Now that Bob has your attention, time for some AFV tests!

- A-109E

T-34/76

There is something that is totally wrong about that kit. Has something to do with when real thing was running around and something that should not be on the vehicle for that time frame, the 1940s.
Side note: the trap is made for a very old poucho liner.

- A-109E

Russian SU-85

It's a SU-85, however can anyone ID the type of 85mm cannon that is carried on this version of the SU-85?
Standard Russian SU-85s mounted the M-1939 modified 85mm anti-aircraft gun.

- A-109E

Russian SU-122

There is a reason that vehicle is carrying a spare road wheel. Something NOT normally seen on Russian vehicles.
Note: The log, or di-ditching pole was cut from a rose bush.

- A-109E

Matilda

Anyone know what the yellow/green square on the side of the hull is for?
Note: trap is another piece of poucho liner.

- 'A-109E

M1

I was tired when I was finishing this one off and rushing to get it done in time for a contest. As a result it has something that should NOT be there!
The 120mm barrel has rifling in it!

Thanks guys!

Well, on the Matilda the square looks like the standard BEF white identification square, but painted in yellow-green gas-sensitive paint instead of white. The special paint was supposed to change colour in the presence of war gasses so was normally painted in irregular blotches where the crew could see it - on the glacis in front of the driver and quite possible on the turret top in fron of the commander as well, though I've never seen a photo showing it there.

Cheers

John

Good Morning John!

- JohnPrigent
Well, on the Matilda the square looks like the standard BEF white identification square, but painted in yellow-green gas-sensitive paint instead of white. The special paint was supposed to change colour in the presence of war gasses so was normally painted in irregular blotches where the crew could see it - on the glacis in front of the driver and quite possible on the turret top in fron of the commander as well, though I've never seen a photo showing it there.

Cheers

John

We have a bingo!
Very few people that have seen that kit, knew the answer to that question. None of the other treadheads in the local model club got it right.

And good morning to you Roy! Now I'll take a guess at the T-34-76: I think the box on the hull side behind the tarp is a fitting from the 1950s rebuilding of many T-34s. Though I dont think the Soviets bothered to do much rebulding on 76s when they had so many 85s in stock.

Cheers

The box? Shocked Nooooo. Maybe my kit has two historical inaccurate items on it. I will have to do some research on that.

The thing I am talking about is an item that the Russians NEVER mounted on their vehicles. It's an item the kit comes with.

Nice to have your comments on the various models, Roy, thanks.

As an addendum to my checklist (thanks again, Jens!) for lifting photos from an Adobe pdf document, I mentioned using Microsoft Office Picture Manager. I use that since it came bundled with MS Office and it's very user-friendly, albeit somewhat less capable than Adobe Photoshop or any of the other more advanced photo managing programs.

Additionally, I use Picture Manager only when I want to crop or tweak the photos. Otherwise, you can copy them from the pdf doc and paste them directly into Paint for saving as a jpeg.

And, if you don't already know, Paint comes with almost every PC and is found in 'All Programs -- Accessories -- Paint'. Easy to use.

And now, several more of Roy's models lifted from "The Glue". I'm slowly working my way thru all the back issues, Roy, and will update this showcase as I come across your models in that pub.

Oh, and.......Scouts out!!!

Hi Jens! Hi Folks!

BEAT? !!! Evil or Very Mad Crying or Very sad Rolling Eyes Twisted Evil Sad Crying or Very sad and a bunch of words I should not say!

That is the Zvezda kit.

Ahh yes, it's bit on the doggy side as well, I built one for an all-thumbed friend, one of my rare forays into 1/35 and never for my own collection.

- Roy_A_Lingle
Good call Jens! I mostly try to do 1/35 kits. Fingers are too fat for the smaller scales and 1/35 is easier on the eyes. As for a DML kit (which I do have tons of), I am guessing you are thinking about the M1A1? No, that is an Academy kit which needed a lot of beating to get into shape.

Actually, I wasn't too sure about the Soviet kits, couldn't remember what Tamiya supplied for roadwheels.

- Roy_A_Lingle
THANKS BOB!

Preaching to the choir here, although I would have time, I find I can't get finished anything currently, got some kits more or less built, some primed or preshaded, but then the drive is gone. Crying or Very sad Sometimes I can't decide on the livery, other times I don't feel up to correcting all the little faults...

- Roy_A_Lingle
Somehow I did do a rush job on a Tamiya M551 last year for a contest. Took second place! Razz Razz (Secert Message: there were only two kits in the category)

I do have three I have started working on and maybe I will get one of them finished sometime during this year! Confused
Thanks Guys!

Hey, congratulations anyways, always nice to have one's achievements rewarded.

I need to get off my duff, we have a show coming up in September and I should get busy....

Got me baffled as well, you aren't referring to the antenna mount which was a rare thing early in the war?

No, vehicle depicks a late summer 1943 company commanders vehicle. The anteena is missing and I haven't got around to replacing it. That is why the TC is holding up a flare pistol. He about to signal his tank company to attack.

Side Note: the glass display case I store that kit in is to short for the flare pistol and barrel was broken off the first time I put the top on the case.

You however are warmer that the area John was talking about.

Remember, the item is NOT Russian.

Wild guess - The Lifting eyes on the turret? or the ventilator at the back of the turret

The only other thing I can think of is the ammo crate on the side. Thouhg I'm pretty sure that I've seen photos of T-34s carrying them like that - though with rope or a strap to keep them in place.

Cheers
