Did the M1 have the retainers on the sprocket or just the M1 IP?

Track retainer rings or paddle wheels I think are still used by the USMC.

We stopped using them with the M1IPs, although I seem to remember them on M1A1's. By that time, they were not very popular with crews so they were 'individually' left off or removed.

The longer bolts remained in use as there was a strength problem with the 1st Gen short sprocket bolts. It was not uncommon to see tanks with the longer bolts but a simple whacking with a sledge hammer, snapped them off flush with the sprocket. Cool

OK, thanks. So the retainer means nothing as far as vehicle model ID?

Correct, you can see them on M1, M1IP, M1A1.

June 1987 - 4/8 CAVs CAT 87 firing tank (M1IP) with 'paddlewheel', passing Range 132 Graf, while 'our' M1IP's have them removed.

'My tank'(M1IP), A66, 4/32 Ar, 3rd AD being railloaded. Paddlewheels are removed but long bolts are plain to see. (circa 1987).

As an interesting post-script.

I happened to notice that the M1A1 (TTB) which was tested in the early 90's, has the track retaining ring mounted.

Also it seems to have the 1st Generation final drives. I always hated those. A little more difficult to engage/disengage than the current type.

I always wondered why some M1's had them and some did not.
