Surviving Pz 61 and Pz 68
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Pz 68 (M-77807) should be in Military Museum of Southern New England, Danbury, CT (USA). Neil, do you know anything about this?

I visited and photographed the collection in August 2008 and didn't see one then.

Based on swiss records we know one was acquired by the Museum. That's all I have so far

by the way, I found today a brand new vehicles list for the MM-SNE in Danbury :

Indoor :

http://www.usmilitarymuseum.org/sitefiles/exhibits.html

Outdoor :

http://www.usmilitarymuseum.org/sitefiles/exhibits2.html

On this list, there are not 3 Locusts, but only 1. Some vehicles desingations are also more accurate than on this list :

Inside I saw just one Locust, and the M1917 was gone. The outdoor list doesn't exactly match what I saw either - for example I took pictures of a Centurion and M42 Duster. Note the IS-2 (partial) was just a turret.

The Centurion should be a swiss Pz 55/60. r/n M-78551

Yes, from a quick look at the photos I can confirm the reg is "78551". It looks like the 'M' has been painted over, possibly because the label says "Centurion Tank United Kingdom".

This is a picture of the number on the nose of the Best (NLD) Pz 61. The last 3 digits are the same as the last 3 of the registration number (M-77620)

Exactly so - I couldn't have put it better myself! Did you know this, or just checked? Anyway, I've uploaded my Muckleburgh pics for comparison:

Muckleburgh Panzer 61

It should at least be a way to confirm or even find out the registration of Panzer 61s. The other digits may also give us some other information (serial number, if different?) if we can work them out.

Edit: In fact, I can see now the other digits - 971 6545 - are the same in Lesley's photo and mine, so maybe it's just a code for 'Panzer 61'.

That's a very coold discovery. From now on I'll try to double-check Pz 61 and 68 for the stamped numbers.

I'll keep you updated, Thanks!

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to apply to the Pz 68 - at least I can't see a number on the Muckleburgh one:

Muckleburgh Pz 68 (no text)

Pz 68 (M-77717), Frankfurt (Germany) will soon move to Belgium. I will post more details as soon as I get them.

There is a Pz 68 in Sweden, Army Museum Collection located at the Army Museum depo i Strangnas.
Registration 77707

I do not know if this vehicle will be on display in the new museum or if it will be a part of the study colllection, but I think that the museum will keep the tank in running condition for future outdoor events. Cool

The photos are from the 40-years anniversary last August, just before the vehicle collection was relocated from the Museum in Axvall to the depo in Strangnas.
The new museum is planned to open late spring 2011.

Thanks Landsverk, luckly that tank is pretty well documented. The most elusive ones usually belong to private collections.

I'm sad to say I never got to see the Axvall museum, and never will now. The museum staff kindly sent me photo's of the German vehicles for inclusion in Preserved German Tanks, and they can now be seen online:

Axvall Pansarmuseet

I'll make sure I visit Strangnas as soon as it's open.
