Ft Hood MATES M60A3 and M4 Sherman...
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hey all, took the family on a 21 miles drive from out house up to the north art of the post where all the National Guard stuff is. I'd heard there was an M60 and an M4 there. True enought there was but they were locking up and told us to come back to see the M4 another time. Some 80year old gate guard that was an a-- and who could have probably been overtaken by blowing him over. I had to take the M4 pic's through the fence. From the pictures it appears to be an M4A3 (76) HVSS, with the metla T-66 track. What you cant see in these pictures is that the tread pattern on one is opposite the other side. Can these treads be put on backwards?
We were there at 17:00hrs, right as everyone was getting off from work. Seeing these guardsman walk out of the building with their BDU shirts unbuttoned and hanging open and with their patrol caps tilted back on their heads, makes me embarrassed to say I was ever in the Guard. I believe a phone call or even a personal visit by myself to the Major I spoke to up there might be in order.
That dogs grave marker was right under the rear of the M60. You can see one picture of a large field of tracked vehicles. There was one area of original M2 Bradleys without upgrades. I had'nt see those since 1994 when the scout platoon of 2-7IN, 24th ID had them.

M4A3(105)HVSS with what appears to me to be T80 track. Yeah, they could be put on backwards but I'm sure it wasn't recommended!

With most vehicles, there is no fit or operating problem with installing the track backwards. The problem is when the vehicle starts running through mud. For most vehicles, the pattern on the road surface of the track block is designed to throw the mud off as it comes up around the rear idler or rear drive sprocket. That type of block is called "self cleaning track". I for one who has cleaned a lot of mud off of many a track, am not sure it really works.

It actually does work, at least on tractors. When growing up I worked sometimes an a neighbors farm. One time his on and I were supposed to put the big drive wheels back on an old Minneapolis Moline tractor. We put them on with the Chevrons pointing down as you looked at the rear of the tire. Well when the farmer saw it he pointed at a muddy field and had his son drive through the field. Well in a minute or so the mud getting caught in the chevrons and getting flung over the top of the tire he made it back to the work area. Then the farmer exlained that having the chevrons pointing in the direction of travel allowed the mud to slide off the tire as it pulled out. pointing the wheels the way we had them caused the mud to stay trapped and flung it over the top (even more than it usually did) as well as causing a rougher ride as clumps got caught under the tire instead of being pushed to the side.

So it is self cleaning within the tire engineers definition of selfcleaning Rolling Eyes

Actually guardpost weeniedom seems to be a characteristic of Texas posts. Some months ago I was supposed to give a talk at the one in Austin. Upon arrival, the senior NCO manning the gate acted a complete jackass, then kept me waiting for some time while he chatted up a blonde in the next car behind. Upon arrival and setting up the AV stuff, another one came in and flew into a huff that the area was reserved for a commander's briefing, blustered, threatened to have me thrown off the post, and generally acted a butt. It took higher level intervention to sort him out. My wife had meanwhile gone back off post, and when she came back aboard to pick me up, the gate guard apparently surpassed his original performance.

In the USMC we were taught to deal with all civilians as if they held the nominal rank of major. What the hell ever happened to common courtesy at these posts?

Hi Mr. Gilbert! Hi Folks!

Sad tail for your first post here.

Welcome to the new site, very glad to see you have made the transfer. All us CIAs need you and 'OldTop' to keep all of us squared away when it comes to Marine Armor! Ken is still missing. Sad

Sgt, Scouts Out!
