Memorial in Bouse, AZ
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

This is a roadside monument, with a series of plaques commemorating several tank battalions and QM battalions that were apparently stationed there during WWII. One interesting plaque tells of the Canal Defense Light (CDL) project being there, also.

This M60A1 is kind of sad. The torsion bars on the right side have broken, so she leans to the right. You can see the prop for the gun tube, and the paint is badly burned by the sun. The SN on the engine deck, in weld bead, is different than the one on the tow lug.

There's also an M109 as part of the memorial, which I took pics of. I'm going to stop in the local museum to see if I can find out anything else on the way home, if I can.

BTW, the VFW post in this little burg is pretty much the biggest building (OK, collection of trailers...) in the town.

Cheers,
C

That place is pretty neat. I used to live down the road from there in Ehrenberg. I think there is one day a year when they have a reunion and there are tours of Camp Bouse. Not much history available on this place due to the secrecy of the CDL tank.

What a shame, and a great find.
Would you happen to have a close up of the right rear bustle rack? In particular, the area where it connects to the turret. This A1 is one of the last A1's produced based on the serial number. It looks like it has the one piece bustle rack like the new production A3 Passives and TTS's have. If it does it's the first I've seen on an A1. I believe this tank was made around the same time the first A3's were being made but I don't have my references with me here. Any other info on it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Joe D

Hi Joe,

Here is the best I have right now:

Your comments explain why this beastie has a number of A3 features (SG launchers and storage boxes, and I believe it had the new type of drivers hatch). I think it had the new type of gunner's doghouse, too. I figured it was an early upgrade or an interim model.

I'll be going back through in late July, and I'll get better pics then.

C,
Thanks for posting the picture, The one piece bustle rack confirmed my theory that they dropped the 2 piece model during concurrent A1/A3 production. I am amazed a 5 digit A1 was found in the US. By that time most production was for export, the last A1 being produced in '80. I pretty sure this one was made in '78 based on the number. Wonder if it was sent to Yuma as a test rig for something. BTW, A1's rebuilt to RISE/Passive standards had SG Launchers along with new production RISE/Passives, the Cheiftain type launchers were first considered in '75. Again, it's a great find so thanks for sharing.
