Indiana Military Museum, Vincennes......new pics 28 june....
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Here are the indoor vehicles at the Indiana Military Museum, I will add to this a little later on...it was close quarters and I didn't have a wide angle lens....

this could be a post war Czech vehicle

The Armor on this Japanese vehicle is broken in many places, it appears that water has gotten under the riveted armor and froze, breaking up the armor? Has anyone noticed this on any other riveted vehicle?

AJ2

Not sure why of the cause, but I remember such cracks in this tank, when 'we' were preparing it for display in the museum.

Perhaps it was caused by substandard levels of steel composition and age. Not professing to be any sort of expert on such matters. Anyone got any ideas?

Neat photos, what is the source of these vehicles in this Museum?

(BTW: the PM tank had been 'rescued' from a USMC impact area. There are corrosion holes in the belly, large enough to crawl into. This is why the steel frame w/ wheels was built and is partially visible in the attached photo.)

Why,

it certainly is, that rear end is a dead give-away. Given the spurious markings, paint jobs and some of the personal equipment visible, the emphasis of this museum seems to be on show rather than research or accuracy- if they're looking for a curator, I'm available, especially if I get to pick my company car from the collection. Rolling Eyes

Yes, freezing can crack rivets (as well as rocks), I've seen evidence of that before, but I don't know if it would crack the armor plate itself.

Cheers,

Jens O.

Interesting tour, AJ; hope you can add more pics to it. It's always a treat when someone takes good photos of exhibits in museums or of facilities containing displays for the benefit of those of us who will never get around to visiting them all. Cheers!

just a thought but I know that the main wing spars in original Mitsubishi Zero's were made of an alloy that, with age, has detriorated to the point where you can scoop out pieces with a spoon, maybe something similar with the Japanese armor plate and it has degraded.
