Bradley fleet, long will the Army kept them in service?
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Bradley fleet, long will the Army kept them in service?

Hi Folks!

Ran acrossed a news article over at Defense Talk Dot Com in the Land Forces section about spenting on Light Tracked Vehicles Worldwide.

"Through FY13, the U.S. Amry intends to spend over $5.89 billon on M2/M3 Bradley Fighting Vehicle upgrades. This level of armor system modernization (ASM) spending clearly indicates a long-term investment in the U.S. Army's M2/M3 Bradley fleet, well beyond the anticipated fielding of the Future Combat Systems (FCS) family of manned ground vehicles in FY14. Indeed, according to the FY08/FY09 budget request documentation (February 2007), the U.S. Army now intends to maintain the Bradley Fighting Vehicle System in active service for another 45 years."

45 more years! That's 2052! And to think that just a few years ago that legacy system was on it's way out the "we don't need it anymore door"!

Wonder what that means for the Abrams fleet?

There was never talk about retiring the legacy vehicles in the near future. The way it was briefed was that the FCS/MCS was to be developed while the legecy vehicles soldiered on. Eventually a future system would be developed that would take place of all the Stryker, FCS, Legacy vehicles, but that date was not stated and just some endstate.

The 'Boneyard' series that covered Anniston had one blurb where they said the M1 could be like the B-52 'and serve for hundreds of years' Shocked
(I knew the B-52 was old but I didn't think it was that old! Confused )

It was one of the employees at Anniston who made the comment! I know typical unintended hyperbole, but it was funny (And the B52 may make 100 years the way it is going. Current plans have it in service until 2040 which will make the design 90 years old and the current airframes almost 80!)

Let's see The Israelis were using Shermans and Halftracks that were almost 45 yeras old in the 67 war.

Huh? 1967 minus 45 years = 1922! Shocked

Aaah,

don't feel bad, it probably was a typo and you intended to write a later date. Since the IDF only retired their last Halftracks not too long ago and gave quite a few of them, as well as upgraded Shermies, to some of the Lebanese Militia groups supported by Israel, they did in fact soldier on for about 60 years, give or take a few.

I'm not up-to-date on the Chilean military, but they did buy some Israeli M51s and used them until at least a couple of years ago, they may still be in the reserves or in the hinterland.

Also, Guatemala, Ecuador and Mexico did use Halftracks (albeit rebuilt and upgraded), some even converted to all wheels, at least until well into the 1990s- I wonder where those Bradleys will wind up eventually... Laughing

Cheers,

Jens O.
