PHOTO-Jeff Button Loads His First Mortar Round O/T
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Not being smart enough about mortar rounds (beyond something I remember from Saving Private Ryan), but could that also be his last? Wink

re: Saving Private Ryan - a US WW2 60mm round had an arming wire in the fuze that was removed before firing, i.e. it armed in your hand. Back in my reenacting days I had an inert example. Does anybody know if the 81mm used the same fuzing?

I'm old, but not that OLD! I actually had a moron drop a round just that way while I was in the Ohio National Guard. It was an 81mm round and we all covered our ears and turned away as he hung the round. He was fresh from basic training and this was his first live-fire with us. Hindsight says I should have watched him closer.
We heard the round slide down the tube and then the thud. We went through mis-fire procedures to include kicking the base of the barrel but to no avail. When we tipped the barrel up and the round slid out, you should have heard the reaction from everyone there when the fins came out first instead of the nose. We rode that soldier so hard that weekend that he never came back for another drill weekend.

Almost forgot, 81mm did have a safety pin that needed to be pulled before firing to arm the round.

A perfectly good "caption contest" opportunity wasted. Rolling Eyes
