Need assistance id'ing a unit based on bumper codes
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hello everyone,
Can somebody possibly id the unit that these bumper codes are for?

This is the M901A1 ITV at the Military Vehicle Technology Foundation.

Thanks,
Chris

I'll go out on a limb and suggest that the 29th Infantry Div. (Ft. Belvoir and North Carolina/Virginia/Maryland NG units) is not unreasonable.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/..._States%29

I can't quite make out the markings on the driver side of the vehicle, but it seems to be pristine and configured as something one might see in an infantry div of recent vintage.

As you can see at the link, there was a "second" squadron or battalion of cavalry and artillery associated with that division. I can't quite make out what that is on the back deck of the vehicle, which might provide a clue as to it's purpose. I'm not even sure it's a part of that vehicle, or the one behind it. Other views of it?

Thanks Doug.
It's just a run of the mill M901A1. On the driver's side, the bumper is B-231. Here's a pic of the vehicle rear:

Plenty of other pics of it on my site: M901A1

I'm going to check it out again tomorrow as I want to see if it still has the data plate. I'd like to get an s/n and manufacturing date for it.

Chris

Chris,

This looks like a School House ITV used at Fort Benning. 29th Infantry Regiment was Bennings equivalent to Fort Knox's 6th CAV, then 12th CAV, and last 16th CAV. This track would have been 2 Battalion, 29th Inf REGT. The slash indicates regiment subordinate, a dash would mean separate. Bumper number makes sense this way too. Normal Mech Inf BN's B Company would be M113's, along with A,C, and D. E company was the AT unit(Anti-Tank) that had all the ITV's. The Vehicle number also is a school house thing, since line units were two digits. We had two ITV's in my platoon in Germany, but were CAV. Very underpowered vehicle, Our M60's would outrun them, even climbing hills. Great over watch with it's Thermals. High Tech stuff when I was a young troop. If it turns out not to be an old Benning School house ITV I'd be quite surprised.

I will unhesitatingly defer to JoeD's assessment based on length and period of experience. Sounds much more plausible to me. Laughing

Thanks Joe! That'll work for me.

I didn't have time today to look at this vehicle as I was checking out a bunch of others. I'm hoping to get to it this weekend.

In the 2/29-I what does the "I" signify?

"I" = Infantry,

IIRC the only one that uses a symbol is Armor, a Triangle filled, my keyboard skills prevent me from actually typing one. FA=Artillery, CAV= Cavalry, etc etc.

My good friend Ascout tells me he wants to call your attention to the fact that this is the 1942 edition of AR 850-5, so some changes can probably be expected. I saw considerable variance from "regulation" in my time in service, during which "subdued" markings were not yet implemented (with possible exception of some forward deployed units in Germany). Otherwise, it was an O.D. army with white markings of whatever stencil size would reasonably fit the bumper or other area. Have seen bumper markings on an M151 larger than on a tank, on occasion. No one fussed a lot about that sort of thing in the real world (which means, other than the AFV paint religion sect of the modelling community). Laughing
