Other M4 in Tooele, Utah (SHAWN)
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Doug,
I believe I had told you last year, that about this time last year dad had had a small heart attack. it was very, very minor; he and mom got to the hospital ASAP so it was dealt with right from the start. So, we figure he needs a vacation. One of our stops will be Gettysburg again, be there roughly 3 days. I just wish he could walk the terrain with me, he uses his scooter all the time now. It will be enjoyable.

Shawn,

I remember our stroll on the quad at Knox in particular very well and a chat by the tree in front of the old Armor Board and Waybur Theatre when he took a rest. Be sure and give him my best.

Gettysburg is awesome and I recommend a copy of William Frassanito's book on same if you can get it...he was a VN strategic photo analyst and did photo comparisons of then-and-now which will enhance the experience.
Antietam is a very do-able short drive away and Frassanito did a book on that one, too. Of the two, I was more moved by Antietam battlefield, though the Round Tops and cover provided by the boulders at G'burg are awesome to contemplate. Both battlefields are well preserved.

Gettysburg!

You'll be just around the corner. And if you have the time (and interest) Antitiem and Monocacy are in the neighborhood. and just to the east is Aberdeen for something more modern

Both G'burg and Antietam are well preserved but in different ways. Gettysburg is much more commercial. At Gettysburg when you want to eat you just go to the nearest corner and there is a restraunt. At Antietam you have to really look for one (But one of the best is just outside Sharpsburg on Rt 34 the Red Bird. It's an old local restraunt that was revived a few years ago. Nothing fancy but good country food.

I think the best book on Gettysburg is Coddington's The Gettysburg Campaign Not a light read but thorough and it does read well. Jay Luvaas's Guide to the Gettysburg Campaign is a very good tour guide. It was written for Army War College Staff Rides. Of course Shaara's Killer Angels although fiction does the battle justice.

For Antietam Sears Landscape Turned Red
is very good and Luvaas also has a Guide book for it which also includes the Battle of South Mountain which was the preamble

Cool! We are all on the same page! I have all 3 of Frassanito's books. I have worn them out. I always feel like a geek, cause I usually end up hauling many a reference book around the battlefields.
We are planning on going back to Sharpsburg. I just finished "Unfurl Those Colors".
I like what Sears has written on both battles. I always liked "Killer Angels", I dont think his son needed to turn it into a trilogy.

Hey Doug, I wouldnt mind taking my dad back to Vietnam. I can see that happening anytime soon. Man, that was more than 40 years ago for him! I know he would go if he thought he could handle the heat and the travel.
later,
Shawn

Shawn,

If you decide to do that, let me know, I know just the company that can arrange things, visas on-site, transport for your Dad once there, etc. Reasonable and very professional. Can personalize just for your and his needs, not a "tour" thing if he knows where he wants to go (as I did...car, English-speaking driver who knew how to "arrange" things). The flying over would be the daunting part for your Dad. Heat is merely a matter of timing, it's not hot year long there, ya' know.

I would use them again.
