Hello all, welcome to the new forum! I thought I'd start things off with this subject - are there any good English language sources on WWII Soviet artillery?

Zaloga did WWII Allied Artillery, and WWII Germany Artillery (both excellent sources IMO) - but Soviet artillery seems to be an orphan...

The only work I am aware of is the all-too-brief Soviet Field Artillery in World War II Including Use by the German Wehrmacht by Michael Foedrowitz.

Otherwise, are we just left to Russian sources??? And wikipedia???

I haven't read it, but Chris Bellamy wrote a history of Soviet artillery in Red God of War. His Absolute War history of the USSR in WW2 was excellent, so the artillery book should be equally good. I'm currently trying to get a copy through our library.

Thanks Jim, I remember I have heard of that one before and have been looking for it from time to time (hmm, I think I even got it through inter-library loan last year) - but I also understand/remember correctly its more of a history of Soviet artillery operations; rather than a guide to Soviet artillery pieces...

Actually I did take an entry level course in Russian back in 1978-9. Not one of my more succesful college courses and I don't remember a thing. It would probably do me some good to pull out the books and brush up at least on the alphabet and basics since I am sitting here with over 50 sets of Cyrillic keyboard labels on my desk that I need to get installed on some systems we are delivering to Kazakhstan in the very near future
