Got notice today that flickr was acquired by smug mug. I used to have flickr pro service years ago, but decided to just go with the no pay flickr account. I presume that smug mug may want to charge fees to keep our photos in their system, but have no information on that. If in the future I drop smug mug, all of my photos are saved in my computer, or on memory cards, and I can be contacted at: rbeshcook @ aol.com if my photos disappear from smug mug/flickr. For now not even sure if I'll post on flickr, will wait and see. Anyone have more information on this please post. Rick

To wait and see seems the most sensible thing to do

Hi Rick,

I was surprised to receive the announcement from SmugMug.

We've been using SmugMug for about 7 years now and have been very happy with the outfit. It will be interesting to see what they are going to do with Flickr and if the acquisition will impact both companies or one more than the other or....

It is difficult NOT to imagine a resulting pain in the rear with a change like this. The implosion of Photobucket and the ensuing breakage of photo links was a huge deal on the warbirds forum I frequent. Lots of scrambling to figure out how to proceed.

I agree with you both - we wait and see what happens. Hope for the best, plan for the worst as Jack Reacher would say...

Agreed Massimo and Vagabond. Wait and see. Rick

I think Smugmug sees what a disaster it was for photobucket by breaking photo links and won't do anything that drastic. But there will undoubtedly be changes.

This is the e-mail I got:

"We’re excited to announce that Flickr has agreed to be acquired by SmugMug, the photography platform dedicated to visual storytellers.
SmugMug has a long history of empowering people who love photography and who want to improve their craft, making them a perfect fit for Flickr and our creative community. With SmugMug, we’ll continue to focus on you, the Flickr members who inspire us all with your work.

Nothing will change immediately with regard to your Flickr account. You will still access Flickr with your current login credentials and you will have the same Flickr experience as you do now. We will continue to work to make your Flickr experience even better.

We think you are going to love Flickr under SmugMug ownership, but you can choose to not have your Flickr account and data transferred to SmugMug until May 25, 2018. If you want to keep your Flickr account and data from being transferred, you must go to your Flickr account to download the photos and videos you want to keep, then delete your account from your Account Settings by May 25, 2018.

If you do not delete your account by May 25, 2018, your Flickr account and data will transfer to SmugMug and will be governed by SmugMug’s Terms and Privacy Policy.

Read more detailed FAQs about this transition on the Flickr Blog.

We’re happy that Flickr is your home for photography and we look forward to the next chapter in our adventure together as we join the SmugMug family.

Thanks,
The Flickr Team"

Take it how you will.

That's the kind of corporate mumbo-jumbo you should expect under the current circumstances Smile

Well Flickr is going to limit free accounts to 1000 photos starting next February. Figured this was coming, so I'm done posting on Flickr. Most or all of my photos are saved in my computer. Just disregard my previous posts to check out my flickr account. Thanks, Rick Eshleman.

It's a shame that flickr can't support itself with ads like other sites do. To make members pay to post their own photographs would be like "pbase" site that offers photos for sale from pro photographers. Us amateurs can't see paying 49.99 USD a year to host our own photos, that are freely shared with site members. Years ago, when the Health Maintenance Orgs (HMOs) started charging 5 USD a week (was in a union back then) I'd go to negotiating meetings and say "They'll raise the price every year", and they did. Same goes with flickr, photobucket, etc. all will eventually disappear like the HMOs (but copays still exist and go up every year) on new and lesser health care.
I know showing the health care example goes off subject, but my point is why pay? AFVs and photos are still my interest and I can be reached at: rbeshcook @ aol.com for any reasonable requests of photos and information. Thanks, Rick

Well, that sucks. In fact, haven't seen a non-sucky development in the image hosting & 3rd party sharing sphere since early 2000-oughts. Haven't done a damn thing about my own shared images on numerous sites and ironically, Flickr was one I'd considered moving to. Haven't had a linkable hosting service since "the bucket" spit in the soup.

That's definitely a shame Rick. Your generosity has been appreciated!

Edit: What about something like imgur or Fotki?

Chris, Imgur or Fotki I may look into, but not now. They may follow photobucket and flickr and charge fees eventually. Just going to wait and see. I have almost 17,000 photos (not all AFVs) on flickr all are in my computer and on memory cards, will place them later.

At least for the next year I'll have a flickr pro account. After checking numerous sites found that most are lacking in storage space, and cost more for pro services. For now will see if flickr pro is worth it. Also, on Thanksgiving day going to My Daughter's house, found 75mm Pak 40 and a 57mm AT Gun at American Legion Post 182, Whiteford, MD. Photos posted on flickr.

The price is not terrible for what you get. The cloud backup alone almost makes it worth upgrading. I only went with Smugmug for my stuff because I liked Vagabond's site and its format as well as the right click protection.
