As I am given to understand that young fr8ycat is rather ...errr.... busy at the moment, spending some time on my rack as penance for a certain ale-coveting offense, I have opted to submit the next round of this highly amusing pastime in his stead....I expect he will be up and walking again in a few weeks. In the meantime, enjoy:

Round Two:

Subject: Aviation History

First, you shall need to know two items of trivia:

A) The country which is the subject of this thread:
com-central.net/index....amp;t=1720

B) The state in which the incident decribed in this thread, happened in:
com-central.net/index....amp;t=1805

Now here is the puzzle - Name this aircraft:

This aircraft is unique in that it is the first American land-based patrol plane ever designed expressly for that purpose. Both of it's predecessors were built - by the same manufacturer - as transports. The aircraft's versatility is evident from the many missions this aircraft was called on to perform.

For armament, this vessel carried six 12.7 mm machine guns in addition to mountings for up to sixteen underwing rockets. This aircraft assumed patrol duties shortly after the "The Big One" and saw first combat use during the conflict used as the setting for your once-popular television show M*A*S*H.

The most infamous one of all was given a name something along the lines of "Unreasonably-Argumentative Terrapin", and, over the course of 3 days, flew non-stop without refueling, from Point A (first item mentioned above) to point B (second item mentioned above) - a record setting distance of over eleven thousand miles. This record stood almost forty years until Burt Rutan's "Voyager" circled the globe non-stop in 1986.

1) Pray tell, what aircraft is this? (Include the Manufacturer, Model and Name)
2) What was the actual nickname of the aircraft that made the record-setting flight?
3) (Extra Credit) - what animal went along on the flight?

The first Com-C member posting the answer to items 1), 2) and optionally 3) here shall be the winner!

But - lest ye think this easy, unlike JG300-Stoopy I opt to withhold the winnings until the winner submits THEIR trivia question here, along with a prize of negligible value, in order to keep this remarkable contest of wits going - so answer only if ye be stout of heart and committed!

And speaking of the prize, the bounty that I offer to the winner is this:

A FREE copy of this extremely rare repaint for David Copely's remarkable P-38L Lightning for FS2004. Obtained by special consignment of a repaint artisan, and at considerable cost to myself, this is my own custom P-38 Lightning "The Cardinal's Sin" which represents a peacetime version of my main steed in the CFS arenas. Currently there is only ONE copy in existence in the Known World and it is on my computer device only. Be the envy of your flight-simming friends and invoke fear into the hearts of heretics and blasphemers around the globe.

For the extra credit, I shall provide a free toothpick which you may insert underneath a fingernail, puncture yourself, or abuse yourself in any variety of amusing and cleansing ways.

I shall provide a temporary download link for the Cardinal's Sin repaint via PM to the winner, and shall mail the toothpick should an address be provided.

Best of Luck to ye Gentlemen!

1) It is the Lockheed P2V-7 Neptune
2) The nickname of the plane that went from Perth, Australia to Columbus, Ohio was the "Truculent Turtle".
3) They brought along a kangaroo.

(gotta love google )

You are correct, Sir!

I still would like to imagine that even with the luxury of a search engine, you didn't find the answer immediately! Razz

Nevertheless you have all answers correct and are the winner. My congratulations to you.

I shall make the bounty ready and prepare the toothpick for shipment, in anticipation of your submittal for the next round....well done!

Yeah, you're right, it took three or four serches before I figured it out Wink You shoulda left out the part about MASH (and thereby the Korean War), that would've given me another two or three seraches Mr. Green

I've already got my prize picked out for the next question, now I just need a question to go with it

Stay tuned!

Alrighty!

Round Three!!!

Subject: Aviation Weather Hazards!

First off, have a look at this thread:

www.com-central.net/in...amp;t=1855

Specifically, the second page, second to last post. It seems that the escorts for that flight were having some trouble with their pitot's icing over! So this leads me to the next trivia question...

1) Name the three types of structural aircraft icing.
2) Give a brief description of each type.

And for extra credit,

3) Name at least two types of modern deicing equipment used to remove ice from aircraft in flight. (I can think of at least three off the top of my head).

RULES (Read before looking for the answers!):

No search engines! You are more than welcome to go to your favorite aviation forum and use the search feature on that forum, or ask anyone you know, or look in text books, or whatever. Just no search engines! We'll be working off the honor system here, so I'll just have to trust that you didn't cheat Wink

(EDIT: Ok, I really don't know how hard this will be, but if no one has answered it by 11-3-05 at 1700 GMT, then you guys can use search engines.)

BOUNTY!

The first person to correctly give me the three types of icing with satisfactory descriptions will be getting a wonderful, slightly-used "Takeoff" Newsletter!

Yes, you will be getting a slightly bent copy of the University of North Dakota's John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Science's (How's that for a mouthful?) weekly "Takeoff" newsletter, signed by your truly! Although the one I will be sending has not come out yet, the newsletter will include several items, including:

Calendar of Events!
News about the Aerospace department!
Student Aerostop trivia!
New aviation job postings!
Safety incidents and occurences at UND Flight Operations!

Other printed items that may be included will be:

Contents of the winter survival kit, and how to use them!
Scholarship oppurtunities!
Miscellaneous safety warnings!

If you answer correctly, all two or three pages of this newsletter can be yours!

And if you get the extra credit question, you will get an outdated IFR Approach chart! Whichever one you want, as long as it is from an airport within North Dakota, South Dakota, or Minnisota. ILS, GPS, VOR, NDB, Localizer, whatever, it can be yours!

Good luck!

Winner must be a member of Com-Central.net, age between 2 months and 106 and 3/4 years. XcalibeR (herein known as me, I, or any like term), shall not send the said prize until the Winner has submitted the next trivia question for consideration by the Com-Central.net users. Much thought has been put into this question, alright, not that much, but still you'd better appriciate it. Even if the Winner does put up another question, that does not mean he or she will recieve the said prize immediatly. What do you expect people? Seriously though, I'm gonna wait till the newsletter that has all the reported safety incidents and occurences comes out, which may be a month or two, cause that one is always more interesting to read. I don't think it will be that long though. Also, I havn't sent anything internationally before. If the Winner lives somewhere other than the US, someone's gotta tell me if it require's any additional paperwork/stamps/etc. If it does, I would hope someone in the US that is more knowledgable about these things can act as a middle man, since I'm a poor college kid.. That way I could just mail the bounty to you, then you can forward it to the winner. Wee, now multiple people can share in the prize! Anyways, all procedes go to benefit the Derek Zoolander Center For Kids Who Can't Read Good And Would Like To Do Other Things Good Too foundation... group... thing. In other words, this doesn't cost a thing, so follow the rules and nobody gets any money. Nobody gets money even if you don't follow the rules. Whatever. Blah. Have you actually read this far through the fine print?

Your sure there's 3?

I know of 2 and have checked my PPL test prep book but cant find a third.

HHmmmmm. So much for going to bed. LOL

Alright, I'll go out on a limb.

Structrual icing #1 Clear. Appearance is hard and glossy formed by large water droplets.

#2 Rime. Brittle and frost like formed by small water droplets.

Now #3 will probably be a bust. I say either ice crystals (-26F/-40C) when water can no longer exist in a super cooled liquid state and only ice crystals can be found, but since they are dry really pose no threat of adhering to surfaces,

Or carb icing?
