In other news, the Comet is just a gussied-up Sherman with a fancy pea-shooter. Seen it in Hunnicutt. Mr. Green

Anyway, all tanks are more or less derivated from the horse carts, by adding an engine, tracks, armour plates, a gun etc..... so... Wink

Harrumph,

they also do not know their history, since how could it see limited action in a conflict that ended in 1953 when it was produced from 1957- according to this sign?

I want to see the person responsible drawn and quartered, ignorance of facts is one thing, ignorance of one's own history and the disrespect to the soldiers who gave their lives is a completely different matter. Twisted Evil

And to add insult to injury, I am just watching Jacques Littlefield's collection on TV and have to suffer the commentator referring to the 2S7 as the longest "tank" in the world... Aaaarrrrrrrrrrrrgghhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!

Shocked

Jens, my friend...

Ignorance is truely bliss.......Don't you know that??

Discovery Channel (ie History Channel / Military Channel ) proves the point .....

If it has tracks...
and a gun.....
and sounds remarkably like an M-1 abrams during movement....

Its a Tank !! Mr. Green

(it must be true, I saw it on Cable TV....!!!! (???) Rolling Eyes

( Warning: this is satire, not to be confused with the american medias proven institutional ignorance to military fact or reality!! ) Rolling Eyes

Remember the saying on the 'X-Files' ?

THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE !!!

No, for real, here's the Centurion with the T blast deflector that fought in the Korean War in 1957, that the M48 replaced. They wouldn't lie to us ....would they?

Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad

That Stupid freaking sign still exists, I tried to get rid of it in 2001. I see they moved the old girl from where she originally sat, In front of the line company barracks of 1-34 Armor. Notice the wierd hue to this green that she's painted. That's what happens when you send a bunch of chapter cases on rear detachment to paint a tank. Unit wanted her repainted on a shoe string budget and because of the EPA/HAZMAT Nazi's They couldn't get CARC paint (Said they had to drag her to the paint booth). Pretty sure it was just a ploy for the paint contractors. So a soldier was sent into Manhatten to puchase some Olive Green paint. The detail got the paint and started the job, unfortunately it was not olive, but rather Oliver Green, as in the Oliver Tractor Company, a color very much similar to John Deere Green. Worse yet, but typical of the type of soldiers being used for this job, they thought nothing of it and continued to paint until the whole tank was this color with the exception of the lower hull and suspension. By the time they were stopped the tank became an eyesore with a very poor first coat slapped on. Even worse was there was no way of getting more paint to correct this, so the tank stayed that way for about 2 months for the whole post to drive by and laugh at (it was right on Appennines Drive).
They finally mixed some paint up (the current color) and used one of those Wagner porta-sprayers to paint her. BTW, all the markings are fictional.

There should be a Sherman and M48A3 nearby if this tank is still in the 1st Brigade area. 2-34 also had an M47 and it was operational for a while in the 80's, last I seen it was in their motorpool.

Thanks for the picture Tanker2010, glad to see stuff from Riley once in a while. I kind of miss the place, many good memories there.

Joe,

I really should delete that post on esthetic (and maybe mental health and well-being) grounds, but in the interests of history, I'll allow it. There really should be a clear, bold warning, however. Thanks for at least posting it as a thumbnail. Shocked

Doug,

I had to, you know the saying, " a picture is worth a thousand words " .

It's one thing to tell the story, another to prove it. To bad we didn't have some 1:1 GAM's to post next to her at the time Laughing .

Next time I'll give a warning with a link instaed of posting a thumbnail Mr. Green .

Well Joe, to update you on Riley, those barracks no longer exsist and the tank sits next to the flag pole on Custer Hill. They say when they found Custer's body at the Little Big Horn, he had a big smile on his face. He knew he didn't have to go back to Ft. Friggen Riley. You wouldn't know the place these days. In Nov. when I took the pics, it'd been a couple years since I'd been there. I didn't hardly know the place. They've torn down and rebuilt so much, it's almost a new post.
