M48 serial numbers questions
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: M48 serial numbers questions

I work out at the Yuma Proving Ground in AZ.
We have a number of old AFV's around the range used as target tugs/targets.
This week at one of our gun positions there was 2 M48 hulks w/o turrets.
The serial number on the 1st hulk was 9252A1 with A1D325 stamped also.
The 2nd hulk serial# was 8146 with A1D315.
My questions are, what is the A1 for and what are the A1D#s?
Are these for modifications?

BB-61,

Those Serial Numbers (A1D315 and A1D325) should be from M247 SGT York's. A1D is the prefix used to ID the M247 system. If you are lucky you might find a stamped Registration Number just to the right of the drivers right side headlamp guard. Should be a six digit alpha numeric number starting with JZ. The M247 hull is unique with additional items welded on. Here is a picture of the front, which shows the power access box left of the hatch and air intake below the heater exhaust.

Hope this helps, would be real interesting if these didn't have these modifications.
