Romanian Military Museum: Shermies, MkIV's, an' stuff....
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Shame they can´t "trim their bush" though. Makes no sense to have that high brush around there. Oh, well, could be worse.

Hey! Where is Ossie and his pics? He should be back by now, methinks.

Whew! OK, thought we'd lost you there for minute. We expect updates and pictures....and we don't mean wedding pictures!

Since who doesn't love multi-barrel implements of destruction, I'll take this opportunity to wander off topic with a few pics from the previous visit of a few that caught my eye...like this early Naval five-barrel thingy that looked about right for raking the decks of the other guy (or as early AA):

...or an early rotary-barrel 37mm design, of which they had a couple (these were not high ROF designs or anything, compared to what we think of as Gatling designs, after the five fired, it was manual reload time):

THIS was in the building that houses the uniform collection...a 37-barrel...well, not so much a "machine gun" as an early version of what we'd call "metalstorm", since my understanding is that all the barrels would only fire simultaneously. I was there early in the morning and the devastatingly cute docent in that area had no other visitors and obligingly moved the ropes for better access. I have a flash shot of the breech area, but this brightened one without flash is better. The big brass catcher is interesting, they must have really needed to recover the brass for this thing, I'm guessing. I don't know if there was a "loading block" like a "speedloader" or something or if each was emplaced one at a time by hand. The big ammo bins on either side looked like they might have held something like that, but I didn't see any.

Great items! I believe the horizontal barrelled weapon is a Nordenfeldt Gun, the rotary five-barrel a Hotchkiss and the weapon with carriage appears to be a Mitrailleuse of some sort - perhaps even a Montigny Mitrailleuse. Truly an interesting assortment of weapons.

Aint that the truth! Though I may have to lambast Doug for several months for not taking more images....

Cool

I was thinking the horizontal barrelled weapon looked like the Nordenfeldt that we have at Aberdeen. I don't know if Neil has any pictures or not.

The rotary wepons look like typical Gatling type weapons of the time. There was usually a bin or a stick magazine used to feed them

Yes, I think the rotary is a Hotchkiss, didn't see any magazines or slots though, I assumed it was a one-shot-per, then manual reload. I might have pics of info plates, was trying not to clutter the armor stuff with OT stuff. My pics are out of sequence as I was trying to "husband" my memory card, which is not very systematic, but you never know what you might need to sacrifice when you find something more interestng to shoot! I'll sort through my stuff.

Maybe we can appeal to Ossie for more info since he's going soon!

Hotchkiss revolving cannon normally fed via a sheet metal guide sort of like the 40mm Bofors - although I'm not sure if they used "stripper"clips. They were usually 37-57mm in caliber and were used as anti-torpedo boat armament. 19th century naval armament is of interest to me and here are a couple of links to Hotchkiss photos for those interested:

Well, since you put it that way...

...and in the unrelated, but irresistable "Poetic Justice" dept....this is the view that Ceausescu had in mind for himself, but never got...from the portico of the "People's Building" (we're talking huge and ostentatious here) now used for Parliment and other government functions. Makes one feel like Caesar, Mussolini, and Stalin rolled into one.

It seems they have introduced a photography charge there... 30c an image apparently.

That was in effect when I was there. While it is cheap, I might mention that it is advantageous to carry at least two memory cards. Wink

Its a bit of a pain in the butt when I intended taking the usual highly detailed walkaround ( minimum of 50 images) of each artillery piece...
