Fort Riley museum/display vehicle help needed
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Fort Riley museum/display vehicle help needed

I've been pouring through the great reference photo albums at kcamps.org. Unfortunately, the location of all the vehicles is not clearly identified, so I've been trying to match known vehicle locations against vehicles in the backgrounds of photos, etc...

From what I know there are at least two main vehicle displays: the US Cavalry Museum display, and the 1st Infantry Division Museum (not to be confused with the museum in Wheaton, IL).

I think the US Cavalry Museum display has the following:

M5A1 Stuart USA out
M16A1 GMC USA out
M24 Chaffee USA out
M48 Patton USA out In bad shape?
M75 USA out
T-55 SOV/IRQ out
T-72 SOV/IRQ out

The 1st Infantry Division Museum says it has an M36 Jackson - but from the kcamps.org photos there's a bunch of other vehicles around presumably the same M36 Jackson:

M4A3(75) Sherman USA out
M5A1 Stuart USA out
M8 Greyhound USA out
M16 GMC USA out
M20 USA out
M24 Chaffee USA out Constabulary colors
M36 Jackson USA/YUG out
M42 Duster USA out
M113 USA out

Now I'm waiting for someone to tell me that the two museums really share the same display area... Or that I have some locations misidentified...

I even discovered that some vehicles were actually at Forbes Field in Topeka, KS - but hopefully I caught all those...

Feel free to go through the kcamps.org albums yourselves - they're quite good! I can just almost, but not quite, make out the skirt SN on the Topeka M1IP Abrams...

Neil,

The confusion is the 1st ID museum became the Cavalry museum when the Division moved to Germany. It's now again back at Riley but to my knowledge they planned to use the "Custer House" which is across from the parade field by the "Old Bill" statue. That location is about 200 meters from the now Cavalry museum. From what I can see all the vehicles are in front of the Cavalry Museum across from the post legal office. The T55 is up on "Custer Hill" . I posted some grids a while back. Those pictures of the old Iraqi stuff with an M728 are the horse stables/ TASC area. The M60A3 and 2S1 are at the Camp Funston MATES on FT Riley. Give me a bit and I'll match the pictures to grids.

Yes, most of the vehicles you've listed share the same display area behind the Cav museum. The 1ID museum is in a building next to the Cav museum. They are 2 different museums. The vehicles at Forbes Field are from the Kansas Army National Guard Museum. The M42 and the M113 are at Forbes. I took most of these pictures in the last 2-3 years. The ZSU-23-4 and 2S1 were at Mates when the pics where taken, but are supposed to be moved to Forbes along with a M2 Halftrack thay had there.

And this M42 is at Riley right?

Yes, that M113 is at Riley. I thought you might have been talking about some other pics I thought I had posted up. The M42 is at Forbes.

The M1IP pictures are mine. I looked at my set and can't make out the number, ether its 03127 or 05187. Sorry

tanker2010, Abbie939,
Can you confirm whether or not the Combat Air Museum has an M42 Duster and an M56 Scorpion? The TACOM Central Registry says they have 'em. That should be in addition to an M114.

The Combat Air Museum had a gun tub for a Duster and the running gear for a SPAT. Haven't seen the M114 in about 5 years. The gun tub got used on a restoral of a M42 sometime ago. Anything they had armor wise, was sitting between 2 hangers rusting away. The KSARNG Museum, which is about 300 meters away from it has all the armor these days. The M42 that the KSARNG Museum has, had nothing to do with the one at the C.A.M..They are both located at Forbes Field in Topeka, Ks..

Thanks, I knew you would be the person to go!

On a related note, I was able to confirm that AL Post 400 in Topeka has an M60A0 thanks to GoogleMaps Streetview (although it can often be very time consuming!_
maps.google.com/maps?f...9813664595

TACOM says AL Post 1, which is located at 3800 SE Michigan Ave, has an M60A3 - but I couldnt see it via streetview or satellite view.

Of course a lot of other places in Kansas dont have streetview or a good satellite view. Other remaining unconfirmed include:

Abeline M110A2
Atwood M41A3 Walker Bulldog at American Legion Post 46, 112 S 3rd St
Bird City M60A3 at American Legion Post 352
Caldwell M60A3
Chanute M60A3 at VFW Post 1654, 1654 W Main St (in addition to the one at the AL Post)
Coffeyville M60A3 & M110A2 at VFW Post 1022
Cottonwood Falls M60A3
Council Grove M60A3
Garnet M60A3 & M110A2 at VFW Post 6397, RR 2 (S Willow St & E 2nd Ave)
Gove M60A3
Great Bend M110A2 at VFW Post 3111, 504 Washington St
Grinnell M110A2 at VFW Post 2864, 93 Oak St
Iola M110A2
Jetmore M42A1 Duster & M60A3 at American Legion Post 290
Lakin M60A3
Lebo M60A3
Offerle M110A2
Osage City M60
Pittsburg M60 at American Legion Post 64, 2815 N Joplin St
Russell M60A3 at VFW Post 6240, 248 Bob Dole Dr
Tonganoxie M60A3 at VFW Post 9271, 910 E 1st St

Any confirmation you could provide for any of these would be very welcome! Thanks!
